  • Problems on Trains - General Questions
9.

Two trains are running in opposite directions with the same speed. If the length of each train is 120 metres and they cross each other in 12 seconds, then the speed of each train (in km/hr) is:

A. 10
B. 18
C. 36
D. 72

Answer: Option C

Explanation:

Let the speed of each train be x m/sec.

Then, relative speed of the two trains = 2x m/sec.

So, 2x = (120 + 120)
12

=> 2x = 20

=> x = 10.

Therefore Speed of each train = 10 m/sec = 1-sym-oparen-h1 10 x 18 1-sym-cparen-h1 km/hr = 36 km/hr.

Two goods train each 500 m long, are running in opposite directions on parallel tracks. Their speeds are 45 km/hr and 30 km/hr respectively. Find the time taken by the slower train to pass the driver of the faster one.

A. 12 sec
B. 24 sec
C. 48 sec
D. 60 sec

Answer: Option B

Explanation:

Relative speed = = (45 + 30) km/hr

= 1-sym-oparen-h1 75 x 5 1-sym-cparen-h1 m/sec
18

= 1-sym-oparen-h1 125 1-sym-cparen-h1 m/sec.
6

We have to find the time taken by the slower train to pass the DRIVER of the faster train and not the complete train.

So, distance covered = Length of the slower train.

Therefore, Distance covered = 500 m.

Therefore Required time = 1-sym-oparen-h1 500 x 6 1-sym-cparen-h1 = 24 sec.

11.

How many seconds will a 500 metre long train take to cross a man walking with a speed of 3 km/hr in the direction of the moving train if the speed of the train is 63 km/hr?

A. 25
B. 30
C. 40
D. 45

Answer: Option B

Explanation:

Speed of the train relative to man = (63 - 3) km/hr
  = 60 km/hr

= 1-sym-oparen-h1 60 x 5 1-sym-cparen-h1 m/sec
18

= 1-sym-oparen-h1 50 1-sym-cparen-h1 m/sec.
3
Therefore Time taken to pass the man
= 1-sym-oparen-h1 500 x 3 1-sym-cparen-h1 sec
50
  = 30 sec.

12.

A train moves past a telegraph post and a bridge 264 m long in 8 seconds and 20 seconds respectively. What is the speed of the train?

A. 69.5 km/hr
B. 70 km/hr
C. 79 km/hr
D. 79.2 km/hr

Answer: Option D

Explanation:

Let the length of the train be x metres and its speed by y m/sec.

Then, x = 8     =>     x = 8y
y
Now, x + 264 = y
20

=> 8y + 264 = 20y

=> y = 22.

Therefore Speed = 22 m/sec = 1-sym-oparen-h1 22 x 18 1-sym-cparen-h1 km/hr = 79.2 km/hr.

A train speeds past a pole in 15 seconds and a platform 100 m long in 25 seconds. Its length is:

A. 50 m
B. 150 m
C. 200 m
D. Data inadequate

Answer: Option B

Explanation:

Let the length of the train be x metres and its speed by y m/sec.

Then, x = 15     =>     y = x .
y 15
Therefore x + 100 = x
25 15

=> 15(x + 100) = 25x

=> 15x + 1500 = 25x

=> 1500 = 10x

=> x = 150 m.

14.

A 300 metre long train crosses a platform in 39 seconds while it crosses a signal pole in 18 seconds. What is the length of the platform?

A. 320 m
B. 350 m
C. 650 m
D. Data inadequate

Answer: Option B

Explanation:

Speed = 1-sym-oparen-h1 300 1-sym-cparen-h1 m/sec = 50 m/sec.
18 3

Let the length of the platform be x metres.

Then, 1-sym-oparen-h1 x + 300 1-sym-cparen-h1 = 50
39 3

=> 3(x + 300) = 1950

=> x = 350 m.

A train 800 metres long is running at a speed of 78 km/hr. If it crosses a tunnel in 1 minute, then the length of the tunnel (in meters) is:

A. 130
B. 360
C. 500
D. 540

Answer: Option C

Explanation:

Speed = 1-sym-oparen-h1 78 x 5 1-sym-cparen-h1 m/sec = 1-sym-oparen-h1 65 1-sym-cparen-h1 m/sec.
18 3

Time = 1 minute = 60 seconds.

Let the length of the tunnel be x metres.

Then, 1-sym-oparen-h1 800 + x 1-sym-cparen-h1 = 65
60 3

=> 3(800 + x) = 3900

=> x = 500.

16.

A train travelling at a speed of 75 mph enters a tunnel 31/2 miles long. The train is 1/4 mile long. How long does it take for the train to pass through the tunnel from the moment the front enters to the moment the rear emerges?

A. 2.5 min
B. 3 min
C. 3.2 min
D. 3.5 min

Answer: Option B

Explanation:

Total distance covered
= 1-sym-oparen-h1 7 + 1 1-sym-cparen-h1 miles
2 4

= 15 miles.
4
Therefore Time taken
= 1-sym-oparen-h1 15 1-sym-cparen-h1 hrs
4 x 75

= 1 hrs
20

= 1-sym-oparen-h1 1 x 60 1-sym-cparen-h1 min.
20
  = 3 min.
